When I saw this book launched on Cynthia's facebook page I thought, "What ... a sci-fi romance?" Not a genre I'm a fan of but, this one was a sweet surprise. I've read all of her books and thought she was basically a historical/contemporary writer. Talk about not pigeon-holing into any one genre. To me, it was more like a thrilling suspense with a little sci-fi thrown into the mix. I've been a fan since day one and this one surprised the heck out of me. I've been a fan since day one and this one surprised the heck out of me. I bought the E-Book version and woke up with blood shot eyes because I couldn't put it down. I loved Beth's feisty personality, the way she bantered with Jeremy, how the sexual tension grew between them and when they finally got together ... well ... it was hot !!!! The story was compelling and believable and pulled me in the moment she discovered her father's first riddle that sent her on a perilous journey I never saw coming. What she wrote, I could see happening in real life ... imaginable ... believable and truly well written. Great job Cynthia!
Roberts' writing is solid, flows well and her descriptive details of the Sci-Fi scavenger hunt keep the pages turning. Her pursuit of what has historically been a profoundly messy issue; and how any semblance of resolution will take shape is intriguing. Her angle is thought-provoking. Are the answers to the world's problems truly that tidy? Roberts' literary contributions to the debate may be worth following.
A Pawn for Malice
Does an ex-cop ever lose his "nose" for investigating? Freshmen Senator, Bryon Gallagher, certainly hasn't, when the love of his life, Jessica, is kidnapped by a mad man. No stone is left unturned, as he plays the role of senator by day and rogue detective by night, calling in favors and working his past snitches to the bone to find her. The only problem is, who does he focus his efforts on ... her deranged, former father-in-law who lusts after her, a crazed felon hell-bent on revenging the execution of his brother put to death under the Senator's newly passed Death Penalty Bill, or an unknown psycho, looking for his "moment of fame"?
A Pawn for Malice is a thrilling, passionate, and suspenseful romance that entails, self-discovery, survival and a love that is so strong, it conquers the evil trappings of a criminal mind.
A Pawn for Malice is an excellent read. It has romance December 25, 2016
A Pawn for Malice is an excellent read. It has romance, drama, and so much more. It is a fast paced thrilling read. I have not read this author before and it won't be the last time I do. It is Byron and Jessica's story. I liked Jessica's transformation throughout the story. She started out mousy and ended up being brave and standing up for what she wants and believes. I liked Byron too. He was a good guy. I liked that he took things at Jessica's pace. He didn't force himself on her. The two of them worked well together. Parts of the book made me laugh while others made me mad. Some of the secondary characters were creeps and very unlikable while others were sweet and endearing. I would highly recommend A Pawn for Malice to anyone who enjoy romance thrillers. It isn't for everyone due to some of the situations that come up but it is a page turner.
Cynthia Roberts has created a stunning piece. A Pawn for Malice suits the story well. As the characters fit right into it. A chase after many frightening suspects and time racing against him. Bryan has to find Jessica before it's too late. Romance, suspense, and danger all rolled into one perfect read. The mystery of who kidnapped Jessica is a powerful lure. I had to know who and why. The writer has skills in creating a novel that entertains as well as sending chills down reader's spines. Interesting characters both bad and good...plus, a crime fiction plot. I enjoyed reading this novel. I will definitely be looking for more of Cynthia Roberts novels in the future.
Intriguing and emotional December 22, 2016
With escalating danger interwoven into a compelling romance, A PAWN FOR MALICE intrigues and kept me eager for more details. Cynthia Roberts scatters clever clues throughout the story, and I found myself continuously changing my mind as to what I thought might happen next and which person would be responsible. I always like when an author can keep my attention, and Ms. Roberts had me captivated from the interesting start of the story to its nerve-racking conclusion.
The story begins with background related to what has recently shaped the life of the Jessica, and it let me know she can be feisty and does not let someone get the best of her. I admired her spunk and cheered her on when she had a bold comeback. As she tries to make the days ahead better, I hoped her decisions would end up giving her some happiness. Her Aunt Florence is a delight, and I really enjoyed the conversations these two shared. While there are some very good people in the story, there are also several whom I despised from the instant they were met as their cruel behavior was all too apparent.
As the story progresses, Cynthia Roberts takes Jessica and Bryan on journey filled with dangerous exploits and unexpected threats. The path to them finding joy together is often treacherous, and I really liked how the more perilous scenes kept me engrossed. When their emotions became engaged during a particular situation, so did my own. There are certainly several surprises learned along the way, and I never knew what truths would be exposed by turning the page. A PAWN FOR MALICE is entertaining because of heartfelt emotions and lots of jeopardy.
Very suspenseful book! December 21, 2016
This is a very suspenseful book! I stayed on the edge of my seat the whole book. Jessica kills her husband in self defense as he is coming after her. She lived with abuse her whole marriage. It's a sobering story as she reveals how he changed 3 days after they married. Apparently, he was a master at appearing charming and loving, but really he wasn't like that at all. Unfortunately, his dad is the same way, and when he threatens her with the unthinkable, she runs. Thankfully, her aunt is wealthy and can just fly her out of harms way. Or so she thinks. It's a heart-pounding story, even as she tries to put her life back together again. She becomes interested in her new boss, Bryan, as he is kind and compassionate to her. It's a sweet turn in the story, until the abusive father becomes a problem behind the scenes...staging a way to get back at her for rejecting him and killing his son. I couldn't stop reading. I highly recommend this book.
